The importance of PPE in the construction sector.

The construction sector is one where the use of personal protection equipment, also known as PPE, is most significant.

Security in the workplace and prevention are becoming more and more important for companies.

These are the uses of personal protection equipment.

PPEs are fundamental and necessary for most of the functions of a construction worker, preventing them from taking risks.

For this reason, companies are investing in the best PPEs to get protection and prevention for their health.

This way, the more security the less probabilities of work related accidents.

The responsibility of protecting workers  means more effectiveness in projects and, therefore, a better performance of the company.

It is fundamental for PPEs to be CE certified to guarantee the protection and to meet the EU standards.

Moreover, there are three different categories of PPEs: I, II and III, depending on the level of protection that provides.

They range from category I for minimal risks for user to category III for very high or lethal risk.

PPEs are a combination of garments and accessories that are most immediate protection for the employee at the workplace.

Their characteristics are adapted to the concrete risks of the task (work at height, towing, welding work, formwork, etc.).

The most innovative and essential PPEs in the market are listed below.

Head protection:

In construction as well as in other risky sectors, the helmet is the reference as a PPE.

The use of helmets for protections is necessary in construction sites as it is established by the National Institute of Security and Hygiene in the Workplace.

Mainly in activities that are risky, landslides specially.

There are different helmets depending on the risk to which the worker is exposed: current resistant, against lateral deformation, high temperature resistant, etc.

Currently, the most innovative helmet in the market is the security with augmented reality helmet.

It has a system of cameras that allows the worker to benefit from a 360 view around him, preventing different accidents.

Intelligent protection:

Zerintia Technologies has developed an intelligent vest equipped with an Intel processor which detects falls and toxic gases and has Bluetooth and GPS.

Furthermore, the employee can call the emergency services not only with his hands but also by activating the system with the mouth  in cases of great risk or danger.

Face protection:

To protect the worker from cuts and physical accidents by mechanical actions, as well as avoiding other risks (such as chemical splashes).

There are three kinds of eye protectors and two types of facial fronts:

  • General frame goggles: they offer mechanical protection and against radiation.
  • Full frame goggles: protection against gases and vapors.
  • Facial fronts, covering the whole face for better protection. There two types, net (metallic or plastic) and transparent (polycarbonate).

Hearing protection:

They are designed to protect the ears while working where the noise can damage the hearing.

There are two wide types: earplugs and earflaps.

Respiratory protection:

With the aim of preventing issues coming from gases, vapors and other particles, there are different types of masks.

The most common ones are the self-filtering ones, equipments with air supply, complete masks, semimasks, etc.

This kind of masks is recommended for welding works, land movements, asphalting or stone cutting.

Currently, due to the global situation that we are going through with COVID-19 virus, it is recommended that all workers must wear masks to avoid infection.

Hand protection:

Depending on the risk faced by each worker, there are different kinds of gloves.

  • Gloves for mechanical protection (normally leather ones) for unloading materials and minor risks.
  • Isolating gloves (latex) for electrical works.
  • Chemical protection gloves.
  • Welding protection gloves.
  • Cold protection gloves.

Foot protection:

Security boots are one of the most important and essential elements in any construction related works.

Safety footwear must have reinforced point and protective insole against stings. Also, ergonomics and comfort are fundamental.

Reflecting clothing

It is essential that workers use clothing which has reflecting elements to make them visible in the worst lightning conditions.

Protection against falls:

When the work being done is above 2 meters is mandatory and essential to wear retention and drop stopping equipments.

One of the last innovations are the 140 kgs harnesses.

They have automatic karabiners to ease the adjustment and fast fastening automatic buckles.

The use of PPEs in construction is vital to reduce the number of work accidents and mainly lethal ones every year.
